ABSTRACT
The use of the term secularization also needs some explanation, particularly with regard to Jews in the early modern period. Needless to say, I do not suggest that Jewish shipowners were non-believers. What I am trying to show is that the emergence of Jewish shipowners was dependent upon a certain detachment from rabbinical control, from the Halacha, as far as economic activities in general and shipping activities in particular were concerned.
