ABSTRACT

Sport, like other dynamic activities, is constantly changing and cricket is no exception. The county game has evolved over time with clear geographical patterns. Its entry into the modem era has seen a split into two, with the traditional county Championship fixtures played out over three, and more recently four days, alongside the junior version of limited overs games. In the eyes of Mike Marqusee,l the latter are the 'McDonalds of cricket - universally accessible, virtually pre-digested, quick and uniform'. Indeed, the one-day contests are entirely market-driven, and designed to appeal to the masses, either at the ground or watching their television sets at home.
