ABSTRACT

The 1990s are the age of globalization. The 1980s were those of the multinational company, and the 1970s and 1960s of a growing awareness of international action to combat tensions of one kind or another. The 1950s and 1940s marked the consequences of the failure to communicate - and before that came the growth of the nation state. Our century marks the evolution of nationalism while other powerful forces point in a contrary direction. We face the new millennium aware more than ever before of our interdependence. The environment, population growth, economic dependence on growth, materialism, and even conscience colour our thoughts and actions. Imperialist thinking, exploitation of natural resources, intolerance of others are all old instincts that prompt self-doubt, guilt and even loss of self-esteem. We all, and especially the young, know that things cannot go on as they are. Power bases throughout the world must now have that niggling doubt about what the future holds.
