ABSTRACT

The first part of this chapter is an investigation of the meaning of the word 'international' in its application to both education and schools. I contend that, through lack of rigorous definition, the precise meaning of the word has been and still is cloudy and confused in the phrases 'international education' and 'international school'. This contention is by no means novel. My illustration, however, might be. I take the statement of aims of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), essentially five brief points, and show that the word 'international' is used with five different meanings: non-national, pan-national, ex-national (as in expatriate), multinational and transnational.
