ABSTRACT

The resurgence of interest in groups and teams in organizations, particularly those teams that are cross-functional, create the requirement to bring together traditionally competitive groups and individuals into a productive, working relationship - the team 1• When the first meeting of the team occurs, it is customary to incorporate team

development exercises into the work activities, to establish a positive climate for the work of the team members. If the team is allowed to select its leader later, it is important to establish a common understanding of what that role represents, the behaviours associated with it, and the expectations of the role amongst the team members. This would occur in the commonly called 'storming' and 'norming' stages of group development.
