ABSTRACT

VESOL is a set of online video-editing systems which enable lecturers to record and edit their presentations during delivery without the need for any technical assistance or post-production editing (O'Hagan, 1995a, 1995b). Videotapes produced with the system can be viewed by students at home, in study resource centres or in collaborative study groups as resource-based learning materials or revision aids. While the VESOL system requires little initial training for either academics or students to get started, the system is designed to support progressively more sophisticated uses, both technically in terms of the incorporation of multiple inputs such as data display and Internet connection, and pedagogically in terms of delivery structure, pace, cross-reference and timings. The system is flexible, robust and cost-effective but most importantly it maximizes academic autonomy in the production of video-based learning resources. The system is equally well suited for the production of learning resources in traditional, open or distance delivery contexts. A basic system can cost as little as $12,000.
