ABSTRACT

A few years ago I attended a comic story workshop at a community centre in Soweto, along with two colleagues from the Storyteller Group. We arrived at the centre before the other participants and sat outside, savouring the late morning sun. In the distance we could hear two church services taking place. Groups of small

children were playing in the quadrangle. After a while three young girls - no older than six or seven - approached us timidly. They had spotted the pile of comics we had brought to show the workshop participants. One of the girls leaned over and began to read the words '99 Sharp Street' aloud. '99 Sharp Street' is the series title of a children's comic we created in support of the International Year of Literacy. I had a few extra copies which I gave them.
