ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides a fuller discussion of the nature of social change and its implications for schools. It presents the discussion of the nature of social change and its implications for schools. The book analyses the general processes of learning about social change. It discusses five specific issues that illustrate the general problems of learning and responding to social change. The issues are: change in the labour force, changes in information technology, child poverty, changes in families, and changes in political processes. The book utilizes some of the suggestions and recommendations for schools and school systems. It is the product of a program of research aimed at an improved understanding of how school systems understand and respond to a rapidly changing world. Educators are aware of the powerful impact of social change, and generally see such changes as making their work more difficult.
