ABSTRACT

The most important early social training ground, next to the family, is the preschool experience. It is possibly the first time that many children will learn how to share. I remember my child on his first day in pre-school. He snatched a spade from another child in the sandpit. I was about to intervene when the nursery nurse motioned me to stop. Another slightly older child quietly leaned forward, took the spade from my child and replaced it with his own. He said, 'You can borrow mine and we'll take turns.' My child and I were both amazed by this kindness. My child seemed to learn quietly from his peer without any problems. Perhaps this is an isolated happening in my own child's development but in the best possible world it stands to show how from small beginnings great things can be learnt. My child continues to enjoy sharing.
