ABSTRACT

This is the seventh year (since 1992) we have taught our class together. We have also given about a dozen day-long or half-day workshops and institutes to workers, educators, and supervisors during that time. In the process of teaching the material, we have been in the process of learning. We learn from reading, from talking with students and colleagues, and from reflecting on our contradictions. In these chapters, we will describe the process in our class and the pedagogical tools and skills we have learned, developed, and find useful in our work with students. We believe they represent the best of what we have come to understand and are able to implement at this stage in our development as educators. We will also reflect back on some of the fits and starts and trials and tribulations we have encountered during the process of gaining this understanding over the past seven years.
