ABSTRACT
The author made his first observations on how ship-based Antarctic tour operations are conducted and how visitors behave while ashore during two cruises to the Antarctic Peninsula, the Falkland Islands (Mas Maluinas), and to the island of South Georgia. Subsequent observations were made on a voyage to the Ross Sea in January-February 1997, and during December 1999, on two cruises to the Antarctic Peninsula, during which he was employed as naturalist, guide, lecturer, and Zodiac driver. During November and December 2000, he again headed south to participate in three cruises aboard the Peregrine Adventures vessel Akademik Ioffe. Observations aboard overflights were carried out during the 1995-1996 season.
