ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the development of Antarctic tourism from its beginnings to the present. It addresses the various issues concerning tourism, including the types and location of tourism and the legal framework within which it takes place, as well as the regulation of tourism under the ATS and by self-regulation. Many of these topics have also been discussed by other writers (e.g., Reich 1979; Mussack 1988; Enzenbacher 1991). An overview of topics addressed by Antarctic tourism authors can be found in Table 4.1.
