ABSTRACT
According to official figures, overall arrests of juveniles for violent crimes continue to be on the decline. In 1999, more than 54,000 arrests of juveniles for violent crimes in the United States occurred. As seen in Figure 2.1, between 1990 and 1999, arrests of persons under the age of eighteen for violent crimes dropped nearly 5 percent. The biggest decline came for murder and nonnegligent manslaughter at more than 55 percent, while arrests for forcible rape went down almost 13 percent, and robbery 16.9 percent. However, juvenile arrests for aggravated assault grew almost 4 percent during the period.
