ABSTRACT

The number of studies on stepfamilies has increased since 1980. However, researchers generally agree that there remain two major deficiencies in these studies on the effects of remarriage following divorce on children. The first and foremost of these deficiencies is that there is a dearth of longitudinal studies on the effects of remarriage following divorce (Coleman and Ganong, 1990; Emery, 1988; Ganong and Coleman, 1994; Henry, 1996; Pasley and Ihinger-Tallman, 1987). Second is the low percentage of studies that have utilized a nationally representative random sample (Coleman and Ganong, 1990; Emery, 1988; Ganong and Coleman, 1994).
