ABSTRACT

Retributions for escapes were fierce. When a prisoner escaped, the lives of others were taken-ten, twenty, as many as the commandant's whim dictated. Fellow workers in the same brigade would be chosen at random to satisfy the aggressive lust of the SS. Sometimes, members of the inmate's family would be hunted down, brought to the camp, and murdered. When an inmate successfully escaped, he knew that he was jeopardizing the lives of others.
