ABSTRACT

Likewise, though there has been increasing attention given to rural social work (Ginsberg, 1998; Stoesen, 2002), the unique needs of elders in rural communities and the role of the social work profession in meeting these needs has not been well examined. For twenty years, the journal Human Services in a Rural Environment provided one forum for gerontologists working in rural communities in North America to dialogue about innovative programs, policy issues, and practice concerns, but this journal was discontinued in 1996. Currently, the only social work journal devoted specifically to rural concerns is Rural Social Work published out of the University of South Australia and not widely distributed in the United States.
