ABSTRACT

Computer-mediated contact (CMC) tools, such as e-mail, Web forums, and Listservs, can be useful in on-campus and off-campus learning and teaching environments.

Online communities are enhanced by the involvement of teachers who use teaching, social, and managerial strategies to nurture and maintain debates and discussions. A training and support structure, which focuses on both technical and educational issues, helps students and teachers make the most of CMC environments.
