ABSTRACT

The Wellness Recovery Action Plan is an amazingly effective individualized, self help system that is being widely used by people who experience psychiatric symptoms to promote their recovery. It was developed by a group of about thirty people that included people who experience psychiatric symptoms, family members and care providers. I had been working with this group for about eight days, teaching them self help skills and tools, when one of the group members said, “This is all great, but I have no idea how to structure it into my life. I am very disorganized and have never been able to do anything consistently.” Others agreed. So we began working together to develop a system that would facilitate incorporating the use of these skills and strategies into everyday life. With lots of hard work and “trial and error” the group members came up with a system that people are finding works for them.
