This article explores assessment issues related to the application of the construct “neighborhood” in direct social work practice with children. The results of a qualitative research study in which neighborhood is measured and assessed through the lens of childhood are presented. The article begins with a discussion of the neglected, but significant construct “neighborhood” as it applies to social work practice. This discussion is followed by a review of literature, from several disciplines, that underscores the importance of neighborhoods in the lives of children. Next, the study methodology and results are presented. The concluding discussion examines the implications of the study results for assessing the construct “neighborhood” in social work practice with children.
