U sing research to develop a demographic profile, this article discusses the economic status and needs of the rural female elderl y in South Korea. In a time of cost containment and rapidl y changing social service deli very systems, in the u.S. as well as globally, social workers will increasingly need to be able to respond to shifting environments by compiling such data forpolicymakers. Social workers will also have to make their case, as is done, here for a humane, coordinated and accessi ble range of heal th services for all citizens, and health/mental health care that recognizes and provides for the psychosocial needs of patients and families (Vourlekis & Leukefeld, 1989).
