ABSTRACT

The inner ci ties themsel ves face significant en vironmental challenges in the form of "urban-satellite mix" communities. This chapter details the challenges facing organizations endeavoring to provide support to caregi vers in such communi ties. It discusses opportunities for the use of technology' capacity building, and lessons of successful outcomes that may aid organizations in this evolving milieu. These opportunities can be used to identify reciprocity in caregiving relationships, communicate its usefulness to caregivers and care recipients, and validate the choice of both for formal and informal caregiving relationships. In addition, the chapter draws on the experience of a consultant to three types ofinner-city organizations operating on the front lines of helping caregivers, assisting care recipients, and maintaining a sense of balance and reciprocity in the caregiving equation.
