Zuckerman (1979) suggests that adolescents have “a need for varied, novel, and complex sensations and experiences and the willingness to take physical and social risks for the sake of such experiences” (p. 10), and the Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development (1995) has identi fied adolescence as a particularly risky period for a range of behaviours.
