ABSTRACT

The guides provide master sheets for making copies to hand out to students in class, sometimes in conjunction with overhead projections of transparencies, and at other times to be taken home to parentsinforming them about project activities for family participation. The project generally relies on Socratic method of question-and-answer to elicit responses from students. Many series of specific questions constitute the bulk of the teachers' guides. The intent is to draw out the students by challenging them to reflect and think and make judgments with little a priori direction from the instructor. After each question multiple "possible answers" are listed as a guide to the teacher. Succinct information sheets prior to each set of questions provide minimal, essential facts. Some are to be distributed; usually hand-out sheets list open-ended questions to be filled in by students.
