In any survey of teacher's concerns, maintaining discipline is at the top of the list or close to it. This is understandable, because as teachers we need to have enough order and peace and quiet to get on with our work, and a good deal of the time we don't get it, it's as simple as that. It is tough enough to teach well without at the same time having to deal with students chattering away while we are trying to be heard, sparring with us, fooling around, treating us disrespectfully or cruelly, or actually trying to prevent us from getting anything done. Indeed, the challenge of keeping a lid on troublemaking in the classroom looms big to most of us. We are aware that as a profession teachers have accepted the idea that it is our job to ride herd on recalcitrant students. In fact, bringing students into line who are up to no good —and doing it alone, through the sheer force of our will and personality and mental dexterity-has become one of the tests of teachers. The challenge is put to each of us: Can you do it? You may know your subject cold and maybe you can teach up a storm, which is all fine and good, but do you have what it takes to keep your charges from chipping the paint off the walls and crawling out the windows?
