ABSTRACT

Crossed aphasia (CA) is defined as an acquired language impairment following a right-hemisphere lesion in a right-handed patient. The definition, the inclusion/exclusion criteria, and what was once considered “typical” symptomatology have undergone changes over time. However, the rarity of the phenomenon has been underscored by many authors. In the present chapter, CA refers to persistent language impairments caused by a single neurological event localized in the right hemisphere of right-handed individuals. This definition is purposely inclusive rather than exclusive.
