ABSTRACT
This and the next chapter focus on the dynamics of dinner talk, examining the effects of tensions between sociability and socialization goals at dinner. Dinner talk is considered from two standpoints: first, through a consideration of the overall thematic organization of talk at dinner, and second, in the next chapter, through an examination of the verbal moves that affect the development of the talk agenda.
