ABSTRACT

Part II concludes by providing a description of literary discourse to aid in its analysis. First, a definition of literature is provided. Then the context and language of literature are examined. The focus will be primarily on literature of Europe and the Americas with most examples being drawn from literatures written in English, because a cross-cultural analysis of literature would be a major undertaking in itself. However, the principles applied here to literature in English or in English translation can be equally well applied to literature in other languages if sufficient cultural information is available.
