Sexual Division of Labor in Agriculture book
In all farm families there is some division of labor depending on the age and sex of the family members. This division oflabor may seem "natural" since it has not changed over a long period of time. But what might seem "natural" to a farm community in one country or on one continent might not be so in another country. In Europe or America, farm women's tasks might be quite different from the responsibilities of the rural women in Africa, India, and Latin America. In this chapter we have included studies related to the division oflabor by sex; some authors argue that women's role in reproduction causes the extent and nature of their participation in agricultural production. The fact that women have responsibilities for the children and the daily family maintenance reduces women's mobility and makes the household their primary area of concentration.
