ABSTRACT

The first European settlers viewed Texas as a vast, endless, boundless place where land and sky continued virtually uninterrupted as far as the eye could see. It was the promise of land and more land that ultimately brought people to Texas; and even though twentieth-century urbanization has brought changes, it is still the land that draws people to the Lone Star State. The land in all of its expanse and diversity has molded Texas culture, for in Texas human society and art are closely tied to the land.
