ABSTRACT

This summer the Liberal Democratic party lost control of Japan's government. Between a June 18 no-confidence vote and the August 9 inauguration of a coalition cabinet, the party and the Diet were in upheaval. Scandal, internal splits, electoral stalemate, and an opposition coalition were die immediate causes of the ruling parry's fall after 38 years in power.
