ABSTRACT
The theory of state corporatism - which I discuss at length below - clarifies how Mexico's political institutions have shaped labor's behavior in collective bargaining and in the political party system. Although this perspective has a great deal of utility, however, it lacks a theory of economic interests. An analysis of workers' interests is important because, as I argue, under some circumstances labor might be willing to support restructuring and integration. To be complete, the theory of state corporatism needs to be supplemented with a discussion of labor's economic interests under different types of structural conditions.
