ABSTRACT

From the events and conditions occurring after delivery and in the newborn nursery, 52 variables were screened for their relationship to severe or mild retardation. Of these, 37 differed in univariate comparisons between retarded and higher IQ groups and were entered in the appropriate two-group discriminant function analysis. The syndromes and major malformations of the central nervous system diagnosed in this period were validated against diagnoses made at 1 and 7 years. Specific syndromes other than Down’s that are grouped together as a single variable and the individual CNS malformations are listed in Chapter 3. Neonatal seizures were defined as occurring at any time during the first month of life.
