ABSTRACT

When the Gilded Cage closed in 1969, Charles Pierce flew to New York City. Katharine Hepburn was auditioning actors for her upcoming musical Coco, and Charles Pierce wanted the part of “Sebastian Baye,” Coco’s assistant. For his audition Charles chose the Cole Porter song “Farewell, Amanda,” which Porter had composed for the Tracy-Hepburn film Adam’s Rib. Charles was not a singer—although he had a fine speaking voice—but he figured if Katharine Hepburn could sing in a musical so could he.
