ABSTRACT

In February 1997 Charles Pierce was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He suffered with that condition for approximately two years until his death on Memorial Day, May 31, 1999 Charles and I were in frequent contact either by letter or by phone, yet I had no idea he was dying slowly of cancer. I certainly was aware that he was ill, as he informed me almost weekly that he was suffering terribly from an enlarged prostate gland. Many times he was unable to urinate and would have to drive himself to the emergency room at a local hospital where a catheter would be inserted, allowing him to relieve himself.
