ABSTRACT

It was still early evening when Charles set out to explore his newly adopted city. The air was cooler now, and it was dark along South El Molino Avenue, except for the glow from an occasional streetlight. He walked the short distance to Colorado Boulevard and the glare of neon and flashing signs, the sound of traffic, and the hubbub of pedestrians. An Albert Sheetz Restaurant, a chain that served plate specials, sandwiches, soups, coffee, and ice cream, stood on the corner of Colorado Boulevard and South El Molino Avenue. Across the street, catercornered from Sheetz, was Nardi’s bar. Later, Charles would discover that both establishments were Playhouse “hangouts.”
