Not long ago I talked about the marvels of webcam technology that allow us to make a live video “connection” with somebody across the vastness of cyberspace, and it truly is a wonder. Yet equally impressive, and much more invaluable to this book-if perhaps not quite as much fun-is the more low-tech ability to post a survey and a poll online (or send them out directly via e-mail) and in the end have hundreds of people take part over a year-long period. In the end, 995 gay men of all ages took the poll, and 215 answered the surveys or sat for interviews. Without the Internet there’s just no way I could have crossed paths with so many guys in so many places, in a relatively short amount of time.
