ABSTRACT
Turkey is the most Westernized country in the Muslim world; it is the most industrialized; it has a strong middle class; and it has an urban gay subculture. In the late 1970s the gutter press announced every now and then the foundation of a gay organisation.' Bulent Ersoy, one of Turkey's most popular singers, if not the most popular, was often named as a possible leader of such an organisation.
