ABSTRACT

Charles Pellat (b.1914) was born in Algeria. He studied literature at the University of Bordeaux (France) and Algiers (PhD) and taught at the Ecole Nationale de Langues Orientales Vivantes (1951-56) and at the Sorbonne (1956-78). He is one of the editors of the Encyclopaedia of Islam, a member of the Academie des Sciences d' outre-mer, member correspondent at the Academie Indienne de Langue Arabe, and a member of the Academie des Inscriptions et Belle-Iettres. His publications include: Langue et Litterature arabes (1952), I'Arabe Vivant (1952), Le Milieu basrien et la formation de {;ii~iz (1953), Textes berberes (1955), and Ibn Shuhayd (1963). He has won prizes of the Academie des inscriptions et belles-lettres (1953) and the Academie francaise (1953).
