ABSTRACT
During the eighties, pressure groups such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth drew the public's attention to the major environ-
mental problems confronting the earth. National governments and inter-governmental bodies also expressed concern about issues such as pollution, acid rain, the ozone layer and the conservation of rainforests.
