ABSTRACT
Although currency, interest rate and stock options are among some of the most recent financial instruments, the antecedents of this type of contract can be traced back many years. A similar contract referred to as privileges was first traded on the Chicago Board of Trade in the 1860s and there are references to other contracts that could be recognized as options in ancient China.
