ABSTRACT

Study from Africa Techniques for predicting health impacts enable planners and designers to assess the potential health consequences of planned development at an early stage. Armed with such assessments, safeguards and mitigation measures may be incorporated into project design or operation. While there are many methods of assessing environmental impact, there remain few formal methods of assessing health impact. This paper will describe the method developed by a joint WHOjFAOjUNEP panel of experts on environmental management for vector control (PEEM). The method focuses on communicable diseases which are transmitted by the bite of insects or through water contact. It emphasises: rapidity and simplicity; intersectoral communication; and use of prior experience. It is illustrated by a case study from Africa.
