ABSTRACT
Whether the two captains and their pilots assumed that crossing the Pacific from the coast of Chile to Japan would be an easy undertaking after the hardships the crews had already suffered is unknown. In the event, the Hoop foundered with all hands not long after one, or both, of the ships made landfall in the Hawaiian Islands, the first sailors from Protestant Europe to do so.
