ABSTRACT
No artist exists in isolation. These famous comediennes are part of a continuum—of comedy, of female performers, and of the changing role of women in society. The performing personae created by Lucille Ball, Phyllis Diller, Carol Burnett, and Joan Rivers were influenced by what came before them and by the role of women in their own era. And in turn, they influenced the comediennes who came after them.
