ABSTRACT
Within a few days of my arrival in Kandy in 1982, it became very clear that almost no one to whom I spoke was neutral on the subject of tourism. Whether directly involved, marginally involved, or completely uninvolved in tourism, nearly everyone had pronounced opinions on the subject. Some spoke in favour. Some reeled off a list of destructive consequences. Many made ironical, double-edged remarks.
