ABSTRACT

The first mature period of John Cage's compositions dates from about 1936 to 1951. This period is marked by several works composed for percussion ensemble and prepared piano. It was also during this period that Cage became involved with modem dance, initially not from any conscious desire to be involved in theatre, but because he found modem dancers were more interested in modem music than classically trained musicians (Tomkins 1968, 83; 88).
