ABSTRACT

What does “religion and politics” mean? I will argue that it is a field of study whose parameters are only beginning to be established. Methodologically, it means studies which utilize concepts, modes of thought and tools of analysis from both the field of politics and the field of religion. In this essay, however, I want to describe the substance rather than the methodology of the field. Many examples pertain to Judaism in Israel and, where possible, I have used illustrations that are relevant to the succeeding four chapters.
