ABSTRACT

Difficulties over access to land, rather than wider questions of cultural and ethnic identity, have been a central concern for Tharu communities in Dang particularly over the last few decades. Issues su~rounding land, therefore, have been one of the key elements in shaping Tharu communities' wider outlook and in underpinning what sense of common concerns they have had. The aim of this paper is to review changes over access to land, mainly in one village community particularly during the period 1980 to 1993, but also against the wider background of changes experienced by Tharu communities throughout Dang over this century.
