ABSTRACT
Dance is a profession which demands total physical, intellectual, and spiritual participation. As a result, it is difficult for those involved in its performance to follow the usual path of human endeavor. Growth within oneself and competition with others provide the focus of attention. Freedom to experiment is essential to that growth. Some dancers choose to become “married” to their art. Dance, then, becomes a replacement for an idealized consort.
