ABSTRACT
Many British archaeological sites were dug in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when the complexities of stratigraphy were less well understood and digging techniques more primitive than they are today. Many valuable data like fossil animal bones were unfortunately lost as a result. One of the richest Pleistocene sequences, at Cresswell crags in Derbyshire, was ‘uncovered’ (if that is the right word) in the 1860s in just three days—using dynamite!
