ABSTRACT
From the Republic onwards the Roman army kept detailed records of its personnel, their dates of enlistment and their current locations on specific duties. According to Appian (Civil War 3.7), when Mark Antony wanted to know the names of troublesome men in his army, the military tribunes could produce these from their files, ‘for it is customary in Roman armies to keep at all times a record of the character of each man’.
